How to repair and fasten shingles

Are your shingles already curling at the edges? Cracking?  or Starting to lift up? Then you should check a closer look at your shingles and find out whether they already need repairing or fastening. This article shows you how Mississauga Roofing experts repair and fasten shingles.

Materials needed:

  • Roofing hammer
  • Galvanized nails
  • Air-gun tucker and staples (optional)
  • Asphalt shingles
  • Utility knife
  • Chalk
  • Rubber-soled shoes
  • Ladder
  • Working gloves
  • Hard cap

Step-by-step guide

  1. Wear gloves to protect your hand, hard cap to protect your head and rubber shoes for feet protection and additional traction on the roof. Remember that your roof is inclined to an angle (except for flat roofs) which makes it very dangerous and hard for you to walk around.
  2. Put the base of the ladder on a solid and stable ground. It should not wobble when you are on your way to the roof.  The ladder should also be long enough to reach even the edge of the roof. For those using adjustable or retractable ladder, Mississauga roof contractors suggest that you double check the locks before you start climbing.
  3. When you are already up there, assess the severity of the damage. Are your shingles still in repairable condition?  Do they require replacement or just repair and fastening?  If you need them replaced with new ones, then Roofing in Mississauga is the right place for you to seek for help. They can offer you a variety of options with regards to the style and material of the replacement roofing.
  4.  Locate the cracked, broken, or lifted shingles and repair or fasten them accordingly.
  5.  To fasten, nail the lifted portion with galvanized iron and coat the head of the nails with roofing cement.
  6. To repair broken or cracked shingles, locate the cracked or broken parts and apply roofing cement along the cracks. If the damage is to irreparable, don’t waste your time. Replace it with new shingles.
  7. When everything looks good already, gather your stuff and carefully climb down from the roof.
